Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck)

Introduction

The skin and muscles of the anterior abdominal wall are stretched during pregnancy and excessive weight gain. This can leave loose skin and fat which can be uncomfortable, unsightly and cause difficulty in performing activities.
Abdominoplasty aims to reduce the excess skin and fat and also to tighten the abdominal wall muscles. In some cases, it is combined with liposuction to improve contour of the sides and flank.

Procedure

The operation is performed under a general anaesthetic and takes two and a half hours and involves a two nights stay in hospital. It is performed through a horizontal scar which is placed within the bikini line. In some women, the ceasarian scar is tidied up and incorporated within the new scar. The umbilicus is repositioned leaving a barely visible scar around it. Stretch marks, especially below the umbilicus, can be removed. The exact details of the surgery will be discussed at your consultation.

Recovery period

An abdominal corset for support and comfort is recommended for day and night wear for four weeks. In the first week movement can be sensitive and we prescribe regular painkillers to alleviate this. At two weeks follow up the dressings are changed and the sutures around the umbilicus are removed. The rest of the sutures dissolve and do not need removal. We do not recommend any chest or abdominal exercises for six weeks. Driving can be resumed when sitting for a period of time is comfortable and this in most patients in usually at four weeks. We suggest that a period of three to four weeks is taken off work.

Abdominplasty is an extremely successful procedure in reducing excess skin and fat and improving your waistline and overall body shape. Pinnaplasty is a commonly requested procedure by both adults and parents for their children, who are the victims of teasing in the playground. It is a safe procedure with high satisfaction and quality of life for those who undergo it, either under local anaesthesia in adulthood, or a short general anaesthetic in childhood. The procedure restores the balance of the face, taking unwanted attention away from the prominent ear and back to the central face and eyes where most of us interact.
