Rhinoplasty (nasal reshaping)

Introduction

Rhinoplasty

is one of the longest standing cosmetic surgery operations known to human records. Forms of rhinoplasty were performed prior to the development of suitable anaesthetics, although today the most common choice is to undergo general anaesthesia for

nasal reshaping

, particularly if remodelling of the bone is required.

Rhinoplasty

may achieve many things, including narrowing or broadening the nose, removing bony irregularities and humps, or fine reshaping of the tip. Nasal lengthening and shortening are possible.

Rhinoplasty

may improve nasal obstruction to breathing, as well as give greater confidence after aesthetic improvements.

Procedure

The scars of the rhinoplasty may be internal (

closed rhinoplasty

) or hidden in the creases under the nose (

open rhinoplasty

). Small incisions at the side of the nose, which heal without a blemish may be used to facilitate bony remodelling. Reshaping of the nose under the skin may involve surgery to the bony skeleton of the nose, or to the cartilage framework, and extensive remodelling can achieve major changes in shape if desired. Subtle changes are also possible, and careful assessment with the use of photography is an important part of the consultation process. It is important to try to be specific in your aims and desires from the

rhinoplasty

procedure, as this assists the surgeon greatly in designing the procedure to achieve the best results.

Recovery period

The initial recovery period is 7-10 days, during which time a light splint or plaster cast is worn over steristrips, which guide the inevitable nasal swelling away from disrupting the surgical result. Internal nasal splints may be used for 24 hours. Early nasal obstruction is common, and care must be taken not to forcibly blow the nose in the first few days. Sneezing and the occasional post-operative blood clot may occur. The sense of smell is affected for 1-2 weeks and gradually returns to normal. Swelling and bruising persist for 6 weeks at least and will be noticeable to the patient perhaps beyond this time, dependent upon the extent of the procedure. Satisfaction rates are high, and worth the early temporary discomfiture.
