Mastopexy (breast uplift)

Introduction

In an ‘ideal’ breast the nipple and areola are located at a position level with the fold beneath the breast or at a position level with the middle of the arm. Following breast feeding and weight loss breasts lose their shape and volume and tend to droop. A breast uplift operation addresses these problems by moving the nipple to a higher and more youthful position and at the same time tightening the skin excess.

There are several techniques used to achieve the uplift and therefore the resultant scars may vary. A small uplift may be achieved with a scar around the nipple and areola alone. A moderate uplift, in addition to the circum-areolar scar, involves a longitudinal scar running downwards from the nipple to the fold beneath the breast. A larger uplift will involve, in addition to the above, a scar running transversely in the fold underneath the breast (an anchor shape). Breast scars are noticeable in the early stages but do fade favourably with time.

Procedure

The operation is performed under a general anaesthetic and usually takes two hours. Generally patients remain in hospital for one night and a follow-up visit is planned in two weeks. Sutures around the nipple are removed at a week. The rest of the sutures dissolve with time and do not need to be removed. An un-wired sports bra is recommended for six weeks following the surgery for support and comfort.

Recovery period

There is minimal pain and discomfort following the surgery. During the first two weeks after surgery it is important to avoid excessive movements of the arms or shoulders. Reaching out , household chores and carrying heavy bags is avoided for three to four weeks. Driving can be resumed when you are comfortable, pain free and can tolerate the seat belt across your chest. In general we recommend two weeks off work.
Breast uplift is usually a safe and successful procedure. It improves breast shape and can be combined with an implant augmentation to improve volume and projection.
