Liposuction

Introduction

Liposuction

aims to remove excess fat deposits in specific areas such as the neck, abdomen, hips and thighs. It is often used in combination with other surgical procedures such as a facelift or abdominoplasty ‘tummy tuck’.
It is ideal in cases where there are localized deposits of deeper fat (not ‘cellulite’ which is superficial) with minimal skin excess. In such cases the fat removal together with elastic skin recoil does give an improved overall body shape and contour. It is important to appreciate that this procedure is not a substitute for dieting and a healthy lifestyle.

Procedure

In most cases the operation is performed under a general anaesthetic with an overnight stay in hospital depending on the number of volume and areas treated. The technique involves ‘sucking out’ fat through small incisions which are carefully placed so that they are barely visible when healed. At the end of the procedure a compression garment is worn over the area for six weeks in order to allow the skin to redrape and conform to its new shape. The sutures from the small incisions are removed at two weeks after which no further dressings are required. The initial swelling and some bruising settles in a couple of weeks but the final aesthetic result is only apparent at six weeks.

Recovery period

Depending on the areas and volume treated, the first five to seven days can be sore. We prescribe regular painkillers to make you comfortable especially on movement, during this period. We recommend that you avoid any strenuous exercise for a couple of weeks and also refrain from driving for a similar period. A week off work is generally adequate.

The long term results of

liposuction

and liposculpture are pleasing but in order to maintain the improved body shape and contour it is important to have a controlled diet and a healthy lifestyle.
