Pinnaplasty (prominent ear correction)
Introduction
Pinnaplasty is a commonly requested procedure by both adults and parents for their children, who are the victims of teasing in the playground. It is a safe procedure with high satisfaction and quality of life for those who undergo it, either under local anaesthesia in adulthood, or a short general anaesthetic in childhood. The procedure restores the balance of the face, taking unwanted attention away from the prominent ear and back to the central face and eyes where most of us interact.
Procedure
The scars of the pinnaplasty are tucked into the groove behind the ear and heal remarkably well in the majority of cases. The structure of the ear and its projection from the side of the head are the property of the cartilage, and the surgeon remodels this cartilage, with or without the use of indwelling stitches, to correct the shape and close the angle of the ear to the face. The skin is redraped over the ear, and the wound closed over a dressing.
Recovery period
Head dressings may be applied for a period of a week whilst the swelling and bruising abates. Sutures and the head dressing are removed at this time. The ears will hold their position, and are prevented from being displaced in the early postoperative period by the use of a sweatband around the head at night, and avoidance of contact sports for 6 weeks. Hearing and balance are unaffected by the surgery. Minor asymmetries between the ears usually persist and are common even in unoperated ears, where perfect symmetry is never seen!
