Breast Reduction

Introduction

Large and/or pendulous breasts can cause neck and shoulder pain, skin irritation in the breast folds and make a woman feel extremely self-conscious. Breast reduction surgery aims to reduce the size of the breasts and improve their shape appropriate to your height, weight and build.

There are a variety of techniques used for breast reduction. The most common approach leaves an anchor-shaped scar around the nipple and areola, a longitudinal scar running from the lowest point of the nipple to the fold underneath the breast and a transverse scar running in the fold. If the volume of breast and skin to be reduced is smaller, then the transverse scar in the fold can be avoided.

Procedure

The operation is carried out under a general anaesthetic and takes two and a half hours. Generally patients remain in hospital for one or two nights. At two weeks follow-up the dressings are changed and the sutures around the nipple are removed. The rest of the sutures do not need removal as they dissolve. An un-wired sports bra is recommended for day and night wear for six weeks for support and comfort. Breast scars are visible in the early phase but do fade and soften with time. We advise scar massage and protection from sunlight for six months. Finer details of the surgery and the post-operative course will be discussed during the consultation.

Recovery period

For a week or so after the surgery there is discomfort especially on movement of the upper chest and arms. This is treated with regular painkillers. We recommend that you refrain from strenuous activity such as household chores and carrying shopping bags for three to four weeks. A two week period off work is advised and only resume driving when it is comfortable to wear the seat-belt across the chest. In most cases this is possible after three to four weeks.

Breast reduction procedure helps to improve size and shape of the breasts as well as increasing comfort. It enhances self-image and allows a woman to be able to wear well-fitting clothes with confidence.
