Breast Augmentation / Breast Enhancement

Introduction

Breast augmentation

is an operation designed to improve the shape and increase the cup size of the breasts. It is suitable for women who have naturally small breasts or for women who have breast shrinkage and droop following breast feeding or excessive weight loss. It is achieved by insertion of an implant beneath breast tissue or beneath the chest muscle depending on patient build and size of implant used. All

breast implants

have a silicone outer shell. The filling can either be silicone or saline (salt water). For a more natural look and feel, we recommend the silicone filled implants. The size and shape (round or tear-drop) of implants used depends on patient height, build, body weight and desire for a particular cup size.

Procedure

The procedure is carried out under a general anaesthetic and takes one and a half hours. The most common approach leaves a scar in the fold under the breast. Overnight stay is usually recommended with a follow-up visit in two weeks. An un-wired sports bra must be worn for six weeks for comfort and support. Choice of implant size and shape and relative risks of the surgery are discussed during consultation with the surgeon.

Recovery period

For a week or so following Breast Surgery may feel sore particularly when the arms are moved. Simple painkillers are prescribed and it is advised that you refrain from excessive upper chest movements and activities for two weeks. Reaching out or lifting heavy bags is avoided for four weeks. A two weeks leave from work is generally recommended. Driving can be resumed when you feel comfortable and safe which in most cases is possible after two weeks. Dressings are removed at a week and the wound can be showered at this stage. The sutures dissolve and therefore do not require removal. When the scar is mature it needs to be regularly massaged and protected from sunlight for six month to nine months.

Breast augmentation

dramatically improves the size and shape of breasts together with boosting patient confidence and self-image. It is safe and one of the most reliable of all cosmetic surgical procedures. Pinnaplasty is a commonly requested procedure by both adults and parents for their children, who are the victims of teasing in the playground. It is a safe procedure with high satisfaction and quality of life for those who undergo it, either under local anaesthesia in adulthood, or a short general anaesthetic in childhood.
